The Coat
The Coat, a series of ink and watercolor sketches approx. 9 x 6 inches each, was based upon a series of photographs taken by my grandfather in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the early 1930s.
My grandmother slowly saved her earnings while working at a telegraph agency in NYC in order to purchase this coat for the journey to South America where my granfather was working, and where they were to be married.
But before she could be let off the boat upon her arrival in Buenos Aires, they had to be married (there was a law and he was let on to the boat). She was married on the boat in this coat. They were both so proud of this coat, which served as her wedding gown. During what would be the traditional honeymoon time (in the following days and weeks), he photographed her in front of many landmarks throughout the city wearing this coat (her wedding gown).
